Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration
Public Environmental Council
Ref. No 033 / 46-14
from 05.12.2014 g.
To Chairman of Dnepropetrovsk
Regional State Administration
Kolomoisky Igor
Dear Mr Kolomoisky!
We would like to draw your attention to the issue that concerns both a fundamental human right – the right to life and total destruction of the environment. This is the unconventional gas extraction in Ukraine (shale gas and condensed sandstone gas).
The extraction of unconventional gas deposits by hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is an extremely dangerous operation that threatens with strategic reserve of drinking water contamination in densely populated regions of Ukraine. In addition, the existing technology, engineering and geological conditions do not allow to extract unconventional gas deposits at a price lower than traditional gas extraction.
Due to the significant challenges because of hydraulic fracturing technology and existing anthropogenic impact on the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region we ask you, within your competence, to support the initiative of environmental society and to help in legal establishing a status of a free from unconventional gas deposits extraction by fracking zone for the Dnipropetrovsk region. Becoming first in Ukraine with such a status our region will confirm our real concern for the environment and the health of residents and will be a good signal to other regions of Ukraine.
Sincerely,
Chairman of the Council, Olexiy Anhurets
