Представник України знов увійшов до складу виконавчого комітету міжнародної організації Friends of the Earth Europe

На щорічному з’їзді міжнародної організації «Друзі Землі Європи» (Friends of the Earth Europe), що проходив на початку червня в Грузії, координатора з біобезпеки української екологічної асоціації «Зелений Світ/Друзі Землі України» Олексія Ангурця було обрано членом виконавчого комітету Friends of the Earth Europe. Планується, що представник України буде опікуватися питаннями розвитку мережі організації, біобезпеки та біорізноманіття.

Виступаючи на з’їзді, Олексій Ангурець підкреслив важливе значення участі України у міжнародних процесах саме під час військових дій на Сході нашої країни. «Сьогодні ми ще не можемо навіть уявити усі наслідки війни – як соціальні, так і екологічні. Окремі питання впливу війни на довкілля ми вже почали досліджувати і зараз потребуємо участі міжнародної громадськості у цих процесах», – наголосив Олексій Ангурець.

Голова Friends of the Earth Europe Лоуренц Сідлоу відзначив плідну роботу у виконавчому комітеті цієї організації представника України Павла Хазана, який був членом ради впродовж останніх двох років, та особливий внесок нашої країни в діяльність Friends of the Earth Europe.

У відповідь Павло Хазан подякував членам організації та особисто голові Friends of the Earth за підтримку активістів Євромайдану під час кривавих подій в Україні взимку 2013/2014 рр. і висловив сподівання, що європейська спільнота буде продовжувати підтримувати Україну у її сьогоднішній боротьбі за суверенітет своєї держави, соціальну справедливість та європейські цінності.

Real rights for countries to ban genetically modified crops are a step closer today after a committee of MEPs voted to close major loopholes in proposed legislation.

The environment committee of the European Parliament voted to support stronger legal grounds for national governments to impose bans on the cultivation of GM crops on their territory. Importantly, MEPs also voted against giving biotech companies a role in decision-making about GM crop bans.

Friends of the Earth Europe had warned that a weak ‘poisoned chalice’ agreement could give unprecedented power to biotech companies.

Mute Schimpf, food campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe, said: “The right for European states to legally ban genetically modified crops has taken a major step forward, without the interference of big companies with vested interests. Parliamentarians sided with the majority of European citizens who are concerned about GM crops and voted for better EU laws to protect the environment and promote genuinely sustainable farming.”

In the coming weeks the Parliament, Council and European Commission will negotiate to find a joint position, with a final vote expected in January.

Campaign groups today called on the European Commission to withdraw financial and political support for the lifetime extension of Ukrainian nuclear facilities.

Friends of the Earth Europe and its Ukrainian member Zelenyi Svit, CEE Bankwatch Network and Greenpeace CEE want the Commission to withhold the granting of a €300 million loan to the Ukraine NPP Safety Upgrade Project which would prolong the life of reactors scheduled to close in 2020.

The groups assert that the European Commission is supporting the Ukrainian authorities despite their clear failure to inform and consult with European citizens about continuation of their nuclear power generation.

Their call came in the form of an open letter to the European Council and European Parliament.Magda Stoczkiewicz, director of Friends of the Earth Europe said: “The European Commission is on one hand encouraging  Ukraine to enforce democracy and the rule of law via the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and on the other  hand, completely ignoring Kiev’s clear failure, as a signatory, to comply with the Espoo Convention. We believe that the European Commission should be decommissioning risky, expensive nuclear energy generation instead of propping it up.”

The United Nations ESPOO convention committee is responsible for examining whether appropriate environmental impact assessments have been conducted when the impacts of a project may be felt beyond one country. Ukraine has been a signatory of the Convention since 1999.

The ESPOO committee ruled non-compliance by Ukraine in the case of its nuclear reactors because it took the decision to extend the use of its old reactors without fully assessing the impact this could have on neighbouring countries.
